Failed Star

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. As it turns out, the massive planet still isn’t big enough to shine. The failed star couldn’t spark a thermonuclear fusion reaction because of its lack of mass. Unfortunate isn’t it? Having to settle for being the biggest planet instead of a star isn’t so bad; if Jupiter had become a star we wouldn’t exist. Simply put (because I am no expert on such matters), the disappointing failure of Jupiter allowed the success of our solar system.

At any given instant there are scores of people who find themselves disappointed. Being let down is a horribly easy state for anyone to fall into. Specific events that cause disappointment vary but the lousy distress is based either on our expectations being too high, or our perspective too critical.

High expectations generally lead to dissatisfaction. When you expect too much from yourself there is not enough room for unpredictable error. Where you expect the unrealistic, the realistic (no matter how good it is) will seem unfair. Where you expect certain victory, you will feel inadequate in a stalemate. There are so many factors playing into a single instant that there needs to be a presence of self-allowance. These factors can be called excuses, either way they exist and influence the future.

When you feel the need to uphold perfection, you will frequently be disappointed. Modestly applaud success and condone insignificant failures. Every imperfect moment brings wisdom that will allow us to grow into something bigger and better than our present selves.

Handling disappointment is hardest when you are disappointed in yourself. There is no scapegoat, or justification that could possibly satisfy the despondent self. Self-criticism can lead to insightful growth and understanding, but lingering on blame and begrudging yourself is destructive and unnecessary. There are plenty of opportunities to prove greatness. Failure only detours the path to success it doesn’t destroy it.

Sometimes we have to settle on being a big planet until we grow enough to shine. Sometimes shining means remaining a big planet. Disappointment goes as quickly as it comes so don’t let it ruin the solar system.
